Problem and goal

The hassle of tracking deduction

As a self-employed and small business owner, tracking deduction could be a time consuming tasks. It is hard to remember all the business related expenses and mileage and record them in time. Filling the tax form with every deduction categories and remember the business reason is also difficult.
To eliminate the manual effort and time, we decided to introduce a mobile app to help users track and manage their business expenses and mileage anywhere and anytime, and get taxes done easier.

Easy setup and onboarding

Only a few steps and a few clicks, user can easily setup their subscription, settings, and businesses want to be tracked.

For the first time users, the app will walk them through a few onboarding guide to quickly get familiar with the app and its main features.

Stress-free mileage tracking

If the user turns on “Auto tracking”. the app will auto track every mileage and auto detect and categorized them based on the synced calendar events.
For the trips detected with a business event, user just need to quick confirm to categorize the trip as “business” to get the deduction.
For the other unreviewed trips, it just a simple swipe and select or input business purpose to categorize them as “business”

Add expense by scanning receipt

The user can quickly scan receipt to add expense to get deduction, instead of manually typing, the app will auto parse the data from the receipt.
In the future, the app will support syncing transaction from bank accounts to reduce more manual work.

Design System and app logo

I also created a design system including the basic grid, typography, colors and components; and designed the app logo that conveys the intent of the app. Here are some examples from the design system style guide.

Recap

A lot more can be done

This is a freelance project that requires to be done within a month and under tight budget. If I have less constrains, I would do more discovery research ahead of designing to validate some hypotheses. I also want to understand the users more, the app satisfy the needs of self-employed or individual small business owner, more use cases can be defined for small business owners with a team or employees.
